چکیده مقاله:

Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the image formation or using spatial filters as a preprocessing step. However, these methods have some limitations such as a decrease in spatial resolution or smoothening of details and edges. To overcome these problems, Multi-Resolution Analysis (MRA), such as wavelet transform, should be used. In this paper, a despeckling method based on the Bayesian theory and Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimator in the wavelet domain was proposed. The noise-free wavelet coefficients of the logarithmically transformed image and the noise in the wavelet domain were modeled based on the Laplace and Gaussian distributions respectively. VisuShrink, SureShrink, and BayesShrink methods were also implemented and applied to both simulated and real SAR data for comparison purpose and to assess the proposed method. PSNR and beta edge preserving index were used to evaluate the performance of simulated SAR data, while ENL was employed to evaluate the real SAR data. Experimental results of despeckling showed the superior performance of the proposed method in suppressing the speckle efficiently and preserving better the spatial details in the SAR image.

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Exploiting Intra-scale and Inter-scale Dependencies

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are inherently affected by a multiplicative noise-like phenomenon called speckle, which is indeed the nature of all coherent systems. Speckle decreases the performance of almost all the information extraction methods such as classification, segmentation, and change detection, therefore speckle must be suppressed. Despeckling can be applied by the multilooki...

Fuzzy thresholding in wavelet domain for speckle reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar images

Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery has improved despeckling performance. To deduce the problem of filtering the multiplicative noise to the case of an additive noise, the wavelet decomposition is performed on the logarithm of the image gray levels. The detail coefficients produced by the bidimensional discrete wavelet transform (DWT-2D) needs to be thresholded to extract out the speckle in highest su...

Speckle Reduction of Synthetic Aperture Sonar Images

Multi-look processing is a well known technique for reducing speckle in coherent imagery. This paper investigates the use of multi-look processing in range (frequency-compounding) on SAS images. The coherence between sub-images produced by frequency compounding is determined and a coherence model proposed. This is used to calculate the level of speckle reduction for a given number of looks and ...

Despeckling of Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Using Inner Product Spaces in Undecimated Wavelet Domain

This paper introduces the effective speckle reduction of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using inner product spaces in undecimated wavelet domain. There are two major areas in projection onto span algorithm where improvement can be made. First is the use of undecimated wavelet transformation instead of discrete wavelet transformation. And second area is the use of smoothing filter namely ...

Speckle Noise Reduction Method Based on Fuzzy Approach for Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) are classified as active sensors. It has been capable of producing images with high spatial resolution, and able to observe at day and night and in all-weather condition. With these advantages, SAR image becomes more popular than the Optical image. SAR image formation process led to speckle noise; it causes difficulties in the process of interpretation and analys...
